Jean London Responsible Sourcing Policy

Sourcing Responsibly – Our Commitment at Jean London

Jean London is dedicated to ensuring that our sourcing of raw materials is conducted ethically, sustainably, and responsibly. We aim to not only meet but exceed the expectations of our customers by ethically sourcing materials and upholding human rights in collaboration with our suppliers.
Our suppliers are integral partners in the sourcing of materials and services essential to our business operations. We understand that strong partnerships are essential to establish transparency and certainty regarding expectations and standards that must be upheld.
Sourcing practices must adhere to health and safety, social, environmental, and business integrity standards. These standards are developed in consultation with internal and external board members, customers, and suppliers.

General Principles

Our General Principles encompass two main aspects: the environmental impact of sourcing and the impact on individuals within the supply chain. These principles apply to all our suppliers. We expect our direct suppliers to fully endorse and comply with our Responsible Sourcing Policy, understanding its contents and taking ownership and responsibility for their supply chains up to the primary production level.

Environment and Sustainability

Hand Selected Gemstones and Sustainable Sourcing
All gemstones must be hand selected from small, manually excavated pits. Jean London exclusively accepts gemstones obtained through Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM).
While ASM may not face some of the challenges encountered by Large Scale Mining (LSM), we expect our suppliers to adhere to best practices and address issues similar to those affecting LSM, such as biodiversity conservation and soil erosion.
We maintain close relationships with our mineral and gemstone suppliers, many of whom operate small, family-run businesses sourcing materials from their land, where they are also hand-processed.
The majority of our stones are supplied by Priyanga, based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with whom we have collaborated for five years. Priyanga’s family has a multi-generational legacy in the gemstone industry. They possess expert knowledge in ethically and sustainably sourcing gemstones and minerals, working directly with miners and ASMs.
Priyanga's company has earned recognition for its commitment to International Standards. They also adhere to Best Practice Principles throughout their operations and collaborate closely with the International Gemological Institute (IGI), ensuring the authentication of all gemstones. Land Rights and Indigenous Communities
We uphold the land rights of communities, including indigenous peoples, and advocate for their protection and promotion. Respect for the rights and land title of individuals, indigenous peoples, and local communities is paramount.

Sustainability and Environmental Concerns

Suppliers are required to implement environmental management policies and procedures concerning water, energy, hazardous materials, air quality and emissions, waste management, and other foreseeable risks.
Training must be provided to all personnel on environmental policies and procedures to ensure effective implementation and compliance.
Suppliers are expected to adhere to best practices in environmental management systems, recognizing that the sector's long-term sustainability depends on managing its environmental footprint effectively.

Transparency and Accountability

Jean London advocates for transparent sourcing and supplier traceability, aligning with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the UK Government’s Guidance on Transparency and Supply Chains.

Working Practices

Our suppliers are expected to adhere to a set of working practices designed to uphold fundamental human and employment rights.
Work is conducted based on freely agreed and documented terms of employment. Policies are adopted and followed to respect the rights of workers, ensuring compliance with employment contracts, local, national labor and social security laws, and applicable collective agreements.
All workers are treated with equality, respect, and dignity, with zero tolerance for any form of harassment, discrimination, or abuse.
Fair living wages are provided to all workers, including wages, overtime pay, benefits, and paid leave, meeting or exceeding legal minimum standards or prevailing industry standards.
Working hours are reasonable, compliant with legal regulations, and do not exceed maximum limits.
Workers are free to exercise their right to form or join trade unions and engage in collective bargaining.
Measures are in place to ensure workers’ health and safety in the workplace, preventing accidents and injuries.
Transparent, fair, and confidential procedures are available to address any difficulties arising in the working relationship.
